  1. I LOVE food! There are some things that I don't like, such as tuna, but food is the best thing one can have, especially in this country, where so many cultures come together and give us a huge variety of meals and snacks to choose from! Yay for food!

  2. Fatty food fuels the epidemic problem of poor health. Why do people continue to eat such food with poor nutrition? First, food is central to culture. To change somebody’s eating habits, to tell a Mexican to stop eating cheesy bean burritos, is akin to asking this person to cut off a part of his or her ethnicity. It takes the person away from his comfort zone. During meal times when eating together, it ostracizes the individual from his or her friends or family if the individual is the only one willing to change his or her diet. Second, let’s face it: bad food tastes good. French fries, pizza, and ice cream excite our taste buds more than steamed fish. In this stressful world, a bit of comfort food eases the pain. Third, social events revolve around food. Business meetings are located in trendy, high-fat restaurants to please the clients. Fatty foods attract people to events. Friends hang out at cafes, donut shops, TGIF’s, etc. It’s difficult to find a healthy restaurant that’s a fun hangout and “cool” for kids or adults to frequent. Trying to eat healthier places a person in a difficult position: Does he/she refuse to meet and eat with his/her friends at TGIF’s? Fourth, fatty foods are convenient and easier on the budget. A drive through McDonalds is a simple, pleasurable process that requires no major cleanup. Having to wash and make a salad may take more energy than what you get from eating it. During this economic recession, people watching their income resort to cheaper, nutritiously-poor items such as spam. To change this epidemic requires changing the culture and restructuring social events around things other than food. It also requires making healthier food look more appealing and fun. Also, hopefully, technological advances will create better and inexpensive transportation and storage for healthier foods so that the cost doesn’t hurt the consumer.
